“I spent childhood with my face glued to car windows, drinking up the seemingly endless visual wonders and beauty of California. My home state is a place of extremes, from the high sierra to the cliffs of the northern coast to the Mojave Desert, my introduction to these vast landscapes profoundly effected me. These vistas were not merely what I saw, they formed how I see. 

I believe the elevation of details can trigger feelings which can help inspire actions towards conservation. My images are a reminder that meaningful beauty exists on many scales and that there are incalculably complex worlds all around us. We need not seek only the iconic views that are being loved to death in order to experience the majesty of our planet. 

As a portrait photographer by training, my work has evolved to a kind of portraiture beyond human faces. Mother nature, in all her varied expressions, is now my favorite portrait subject. In the simplest terms, a portrait depicts a face. To me, a face does not necessarily include a human mouth, nose, and eyes; it is any combination of features which authentically express the soul of a subject. 

Whether it’s an environment I am in or one I have created, I am always in pursuit of discovering the moment I see the source of my subject’s energy. A thirsty plant basking in the restorative mist of coastal fog…a cut garden flower given the freedom to bend, bloom, and wilt…a sunrise casting a long shadow revealing hidden figures…these are perfect moments which I am honored to witness, capture, and share.” ~Christine Alward
